I created a custom starter vocabulary list for Spanish loosely based on the principles suggested by Frederick Bodmer in his The Loom of Language.
Spanish Core Words
Based on Frederick Bodmer, The Loom of Language (1944), Part II, Ch. VI, pp. 213 – 214.
Bodmer’s principle: Master ~150 high-utility words for active use, with a passing familiarity with ~100 more. These words cover a remarkable proportion of all running text. The four core categories below are Bodmer’s own terms; modern linguistic equivalents are noted in italics beneath each heading.
1. Particles
Modern terms: function words · conjunctions · prepositions · adverbs · negation · degree modifiers
Bodmer’s “particles” cover the grammatical glue of sentences: words that link clauses, express relationships in space and time, assert or deny, and grade intensity. In modern linguistics these are split into conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating), prepositions, adverbs of degree/time/place, and negative/affirmative particles

2. Pronouns
Modern terms: personal pronouns · object pronouns · reflexive pronouns · possessive pronouns · relative pronouns · indefinite pronouns · interrogative pronouns
Bodmer grouped all pronoun types together. Modern grammar distinguishes several sub-classes: personal (subject & object), reflexive, possessive, relative, interrogative, and indefinite. Spanish is a pro-drop language, so subject pronouns are often omitted, yet knowing them is essential for disambiguation and emphasis.
| Spanish | English | Type |
| yo | I | Personal subject |
| tú | you (informal singular) | Personal subject |
| él / ella | he / she | Personal subject |
| usted (Ud.) | you (formal singular) | Personal subject |

3. Pointer Words
Modern terms: demonstratives · articles · interrogative/exclamative determiners
Bodmer’s “pointer words” are what modern linguistics calls demonstratives (this/that/those), the definite and indefinite articles, and interrogative determiners (which?, what?). Spanish has a three-distance demonstrative system (near speaker / near listener / far from both), and articles agree in gender and number with their noun.
| Spanish | English | Notes |
| este / esta | this (m/f) | Near speaker |
| estos / estas | these (m/f pl.) | Near speaker |
| esto | this (neuter) | Near speaker |
| ese / esa | that (m/f) | Near listener |
| esos / esas | those (m/f pl.) | Near listener |
| eso | that (neuter) | Near listener |

| cuánto / -a / -os / -as | how much / how many? | Interrogative |
| dónde | where? | Interrogative |

| mismo / -a | same / -self | Emphatic pointer |
4. Helper Verbs
Modern terms: auxiliary verbs · modal verbs · copulas · aspectual periphrases · causative verbs
Bodmer’s “helper verbs” map onto several modern categories. Spanish is richer here than English: it has two copulas (ser / estar), a rich system of aspectual periphrases (ir a + inf., acabar de + inf., llevar + gerund), and distinct modal verbs. These verbs are grammatically indispensable and appear constantly in both spoken and written Spanish.
| Spanish | English | Modern Category |
| ser | to be (permanent/essential) | Copula |
| estar | to be (state/location) | Copula |
| haber | to have (auxiliary) | Primary auxiliary |
| tener | to have (possession) | Semi-auxiliary / modal |

| acabar de (+ inf.) | to have just (done) | Periphrastic past |
| volver a (+ inf.) | to do again | Iterative periphrasis |
5. High-Frequency Core Vocabulary
Modern terms: content words · lexical words — nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs of high frequency
Beyond the structural categories above, Bodmer recommends a “nodding acquaintance” with ~100 additional words of highest frequency. The selection below draws on frequency research (Real Academia Española corpora, Davies’s Corpus del Español) and covers core nouns, high-frequency verbs, common adjectives, and idiomatic adverbial phrases. Mastering these alongside the structural words above gives a solid base for reading and listening comprehension.
