Mount Sinai Narrative of Shemot (Exodus) 19-24
Thinking about the weekly Torah portions led me to revisit Shemot (Exodus) Chapters 19 through 24, which recounts the narrative of the giving of Torah to Moshe/Moses (מֹשֶׁה) and ha‘am (הָעָם)/the people, who are also identified as Beit Ya‘akov (בֵּית יַעֲקֹב)/the House of Jacob, and Bnei Yisrael (בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל)/Children of Israel. All of which takes place at Mount Sinai.
Torah
I had already calculated the gematria value of the word Torah:
Torah/תּוֹרָה (“instruction,” “guidance,” “teaching,” “direction”).
The Mountain
I began to look for words or phrases in the text that shared the same numerical value as Torah = 611. I discovered that the phrase “the mountain” has this same value:
et hahar/אֶת הָהָר (“the mountain”).
Although אֶת is a grammatical direct-object marker, its letters still contribute to the gematria value.
The phrase אֶת הָהָר (et hahar – “the mountain”) appears in three verses within Shemot 19-24:
- Shemot 19:23 — הַגְבֵּ֥ל אֶת־הָהָ֖ר וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ (“Set boundaries for the mountain and sanctify it”).
- Shemot 20:18 — וְכׇל־הָעָם֩ רֹאִ֨ים אֶת־הַקּוֹלֹ֜ת וְאֶת־הַלַּפִּידִ֗ם וְאֵת֙ ק֣וֹל הַשֹּׁפָ֔ר וְאֶת־הָהָ֖ר עָשֵׁ֑ן (“And all the people saw the thunder and the lightning and the sound of the shofar and the mountain smoking”).
- Shemot 24:15 — וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָהָ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־הָהָֽר (“And Moses went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain”).
Note that in Shemot 24:15, the phrase appears twice in the same verse.
“Torah” and “The Mountain” = 611
The fact that “Torah” and “the mountain” both equal 611 feels significant in this context. The instruction (Torah = 611) being given at the mountain (et hahar = 611).
I’m sure “Torah” = “the Mountain” is not a new discovery, but I haven’t come across it directly myself. So when I calculated it, it felt like a genuine “hit,” especially using the straightforward mispar hechrachi (“absolute value”) method of calculating the numerical values of words or phrases and comparing them with others of the same value to see whether meaningful correlations emerge.
